End of Cannondale aluminium

The end of an era has arrived at Cannondale. All aluminum frame manufacturing has ceased in Bedford, Pennsylvania, and now the auction of equipment will take place on December 9, 2010.

It was in late 1996 when Saeco, international maker of pump-driven espresso and cappuccino machines, engaged Cannondale to sponsor its Italian-based Team Saeco professional cycling team. Cannondale became the first U.S. bicycle maker to supply frames under its own name to a European professional team.

The 1997 cycling season became very special for Cannondale. Mario Cipollini won five stages in the Giro d’Italia, and also won two stages at the Tour de France where he also wore the yellow leader’s jersey for four days. And from there...the rest is part of cycling history.

Don't expect to see this anymore now that production has moved to Asia

That doesn't mean the end of aluminium for cannondale. As I read from other sources, cannondale in fact is going for even high-end aluminium as well as aluminium-carbon fibre. Cannondale is shifting from Bedford to outsource manufacturing their brand in Asia and of course in Taiwan too (for the frame), just like some other big names in bicycle, who have turned to Taiwan.

Hi...thanks for the update. It's a shame that they will move the production to the East (for whatever reason). There is something special when they made it in States...

Agreed Sah, it's a shame that a bike of fame has at least one part of it made in Taiwan and more so when everything else is assembled in Taiwan save only the brand name. It's all because of Giant, a Taiwan own brand started to compete in international market with its world class bike quality at a more competitive price. Can't blame the Taiwanese for bicycles nowadays are just Frankenstiens made by assembling and incorporating parts of any good and best brand that determines the price tag of a rolled out product.

By now those who play around with upgrading their bicycles know just what is really a good bike. Buy a Giant Defy 3 and then upgrade everything else on it except the frame and fork with higher end groupsets and wheels and other parts, to turn it into a Giant Defy 1, to realise that bicycles are nothing more than just a way to realise your own desire for perfection. The only thing you cannot perfect is your own self, no good bike can make you an Indurain!

Thanks for sharing with me Sah.
